AIBA - Associação Ítalo-Brasileira Barra do Cunhaú Amizade e Solidariedade
Associação Projeto Davide
How the organization was foundedThe organization was founded by an Italian family living in Piassasco, a city near Turin, Italy. The family has a strong bond with Brazil because they had lived in Rio The Janeiro for almost 5 years. In May 1998, their 23 year old son David died in a car crash. This formed the incentive to create a social educational project for the benefit of other kids. The family has gotten a lot of help from friends, colleagues and many other peoples, who often didn't even know David and collected the money to buy the ground and pay for the first classrooms of the organization. In Brazil, other people of different nationalities have joined this initiative to educate the locale population. It is estimated that 60% of the regional populous is functionally illiterate which hinders their chances to get a job. The AIBA organizations goals:
The center of EducationThe ground where the center is located is 1460 m2 large and was bought in October 1998. Mediately after, the project began to develop and in June 1999 the construction was started. The school itself is about 500 m2 with classrooms, a small auditorium, sleeping facilities, a kitchen, administration and boardrooms and storage facility for maintenance purposes. The space outside is used for leisure activities. Because the money was scares the project was first only realized partially, to minimize delay of the activities. For now, two classrooms and a toilet have been constructed and a make shift roof has been set up under which most activities take place. Recently a neighboring piece of land was bought thanks to gifts which makes more room for leisure and maybe, in the future, for education as well.
Cultural ExchangeAn important goal of the center is the promotion of cultural exchange between different countries, Brazil and Italy in particular. Some steps have already been taking into that direction. Students of the municipal school of Barra do Cunhaú and students of a school in Piossasco have been corresponding with each other for over a year now. In November 1999, 5 students of the 8th grade of the municipal school in Piassasco visited Barra do Cunhaú together with a teacher and have build up friendship ties. They also met with students of the cooperative school COEDUS in Natal. These Italian teenagers are now corresponding with their Brazilian friends and their friendship has already led them to wanting to learn each others language. The Italian kids of class IIIE now form a group of ex-students who want to support the “Centro Educational Projeto David” in the future and want to setup a permanent exchange program. At our request, the mayor of Piossasco contacted the mayor of Canguaretama and several civilians of Piosasco have visited Barra, support the center and have even bought summerresidences in Barra do Cunhaú.
